It’s summer, the sun’s out, farmer’s markets are open…let’s have some fun about all of this great fresh produce we have right at our fingertips! I’m deeming this the FUN FACT EDITION of Amy’s Monthly Fav Foods!
Did you know that…
Brussel sprouts are America’s most disliked vegetable and one of the best for you? They are packed with vitamins, minerals, and have almost no calories, fat, or cholesterol. Bonus: they are actually pretty good at making you feel full quicker than many other foods!
Broccoli contains more protein than a steak does? It’s true. Broccoli has a ton of protein in it! If you match calorie for calorie, broccoli does indeed have MORE protein in it than a steak does. And, since it doesn’t have saturated and trans fats, you luck out and get the benefit of more protein with a far lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
Apples can give you more energy than a cup of coffee can? Say what?! The high carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, apples have a dream combination of things that gives you just the boost you need and keeps you feeling energized for hours. Just give it a shot and see what happens.
Grapefruits are one of the most nutritious fruits out there, but also a bad idea to eat if you’re taking many common medications. It’s not going to kill you, but some of the chemicals can have a bad reaction. If you’re on medications and are a grapefruit lover/eater, be sure to check with your medical professional to make sure it’s safe to eat them.
Orange peels have 4 times the amount of fiber than the actual orange slices do. It’s tricky to find ways to eat it. Try zesting it and adding it to chicken, salads, or even veggies to add a little flavor (and protein)!
